TIMING OF BEHAVIOR OF HOUSE FLIES, BLOW FLIES AND OTHERS.
Flight of blow flies is initiated by low blood sugar supply and the direction of flight is determined by the detection of airborne molecules from plants fluids or decomposing animal fluids upon which blow flies feed. When the stimulus from such odors becomes very strong, flight is inhibited, and the fly lands on the food source.
Sugar receptors that are located at the terminal tarsal segments of the legs, will get stimulated by sending a signal that will cause the proboscis to extend into the fluid food source. The proboscis will extend and suck fluids in the crop.
When the crop becomes filled, the stretch receptors in it’s walls will get stimulated which will override stimulus from the receptors, by then feeding will be halted. If the nerve between the stretch receptor and the brain is cut, the fly will feed untill it bursts!
